DESCRIPTION:Per Woodland company policy\, due to the corona-virus\, all tours and events at Woodland are cancelled through May 9th. This includes community presentations at partnership locations. \n  \nWoodland has the distinction of having members of every major war buried in the hallowed ground of the cemetery. Of the 158 Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Montgomery County\, 20 are resting peacefully at Woodland. This program will give information on the men who served\, their regiment and state and what they were doing in Dayton after the close of their service. \nThe program is being given for the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Their meeting location is at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch located at 215 E. Third Street. The program will be held in the Second Floor conference room. This program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:In light of the current situation regarding the corona virus\, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is canceling all community presentations through the end of March 2020. Many of the community presentations are being held in Senior Centers\, Assisted Living facilities\, Library’s and other public gathering places. It is through and abundance of caution and for the safety of staff\, volunteers and patrons and guests that this program is being canceled. Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is following the guidelines presented by Public Health Montgomery County\, the Governor’s Office and the CDC. \n  \nDayton was well established by the 1850s and its industry included railroad car\, farm equipment and tobacco manufacturing; flour mills\, paper mills\, spice mills and distilleries. Brewing beer and other spirits were big business that lasted well into the new century. DESCRIPTION:If you missed the New Year’s bird walk\, there’s still a chance to see some of the winter bird residents and possibly even some early spring migrants. Join nature guide Amanda Lawson\, an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist\, on a walk through Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum. Be on the lookout for year-round residents along with Tree Sparrows\, White-throated Sparrows\, Golden-crowned Kinglets and the possibility of early spring migrants like Tree Swallows and Eastern Phoebes. The walk is mostly slow-paced with the possibility of some hill climbing depending on where the birds lead you. Bring your binoculars and dress for the weather. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Parking is available both inside and outside the gates. SUMMARY:Cemetery Symbols program at Lathrem Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wandered through a cemetery and wondered about the meanings of the designs carved on old gravestones? Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty. \nThis event is open to the public however there are fees based on membership. Free to Lathrem Center members; $2 for Kettering Resident Non-Lathrem Center Member; and $4 for Non-Kettering Resident Non-Lathrem Center Member. \nReservations are required. SUMMARY:Bottoms Up! Early Brewers of Dayton program at Woodbourne Library
DESCRIPTION:Dayton was well established by the 1850s and its industry included railroad car\, farm equipment and tobacco manufacturing; flour mills\, paper mills\, spice mills and distilleries. Brewing beer and other spirits were big business that lasted well into the new century. In this program\, we will explore the lives of the brewers and the successes and failures of their endeavors. \nAlso at this event will be Tim Gaffney\, author of Dayton Beer – A History of Brewing in the Miami Valley. He will be on site with his book that will be for sale. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:A Tabloid History of Dayton program at Brookville Library
DESCRIPTION:In 1932\, Howard Burba\, a writer for the Dayton Daily News\, wrote articles on the history of Dayton. He stated that Dayton’s history could be laid out on a single newspaper sheet instead of volumes of books. To that end\, he wrote “A Tabloid History of Dayton” in which he lays out the “first things” in Dayton. This program reviews those “first things” and shows their connections to Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum. \nThis program is free and open to the public.
