You may walk a few hills\, it will just depend on where the birds lead you\, and then look for year-round residents and summer residents like Indigo Buntings\, Chipping Sparrows\, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Eastern Phoebes. You may even see Woodland’s Red-tailed Hawks\, Cooper’s Hawks or Pileated Woodpeckers. SUMMARY:Headstone Cleaning and Restoration Class - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Per Woodland company policy\, due to the corona-virus\, all tours and events at Woodland are cancelled through June 30th. This includes community presentations at partnership locations. \n  \nWoodland is pleased to partner with gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman as she conducts a series of workshops who are interested in headstone cleaning and restoration. \nWorkshops will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday’s May 16\, June 20\, August 15 and September 19\, 2020. \nCost is $30 per person for the Beginners class and $50 per person for the Advanced class. You will receive and includes hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on headstone preservation techniques including: fixing breaks\, resetting\, cleaning and how to mix proper mortars for stone repair. You will also receive a Headstone Cleaning Starter Kit that will include all of the tools needed for the day. The entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty. \nThe program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. If you have purchased a ticket for this event\, we will contact you about rescheduling or issuing a refund.  \nWoodland is pleased to partner with gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman as she conducts a series of workshops who are interested in headstone cleaning and restoration. \nWorkshops will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday’s May 16\, June 20\, August 15 and September 19\, 2020. \nCost is $30 per person for the Beginners class and $50 per person for the Advanced class. You will receive and includes hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on headstone preservation techniques including: fixing breaks\, resetting\, cleaning and how to mix proper mortars for stone repair. You will also receive a Headstone Cleaning Starter Kit that will include all of the tools needed for the day. The entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Every spring\, millions of migrating birds are passing over us at night\, stopping to rest and refuel during the day\, and many of them utilize Woodland’s many acres as a stopover every year. This mostly slow-paced walk will wind though the grounds\, with the possibility of hills\, depending on where the birds lead you. Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist\, Amanda Lawson will be your nature guide. Along with the many year-round resident birds\, you may also see vividly-colored birds like Blackburnian Warblers\, Baltimore Orioles\, Scarlet Tanagers\, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. DESCRIPTION:Per Woodland company policy\, due to the corona-virus\, all tours and events at Woodland are cancelled through May 9th. This includes community presentations at partnership locations. \n  \nThe Dayton Woman’s Club celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2016. In this program\, explore the clubs and charitable work the Woman’s Club and its members offered to the community during the early 1920s. The lives of those women AND men will be told as we find the way to their final resting place at Woodland Cemetery. Nan Kennedy\, Thelma K. Dreese\, Mrs. Alfred S. Frank\, Miss Leila Ada Thomas\, Martha K. Schauer\, Mrs. Laura R. Gaugler\, Harriet N. Stephens and of course\, Marie J. Kumler\, founder of the Woman’s Club and many more women will be featured in this enlightening program of one of Dayton’s most endearing institutions. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Program will be held in the Community Room.
