DESCRIPTION:Due to the corona-virus and the regulations for mask wearing and social distancing\, this event has been canceled. We hope to bring this workshop to you in 2021. Thank you for your understanding. Please be well and stay safe.  \nWoodland is pleased to partner with gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman as she conducts a series of workshops for those who are interested in headstone cleaning and restoration. \nWorkshops will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday’s May 16\, June 20\, August 15 and September 19\, 2020. \nCost is $30 per person for the Beginners class and $50 per person for the Advanced class. You will receive and includes hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on headstone preservation techniques including: fixing breaks\, resetting\, cleaning and how to mix proper mortars for stone repair. You will also receive a Headstone Cleaning Starter Kit that will include all of the tools needed for the day. The entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. Thank you for your patience and understanding. \nThis special tour will begin at the grave site of the Wright Brothers and travel through the cemetery sharing stories of the men and women who helped Dayton grow the air services during WWI to today’s Air Force. \nSome of the stories will include how Wright-Patterson Air Force Base got its name and how Requarth Lumber helped the Wright’s build their planes. There will be a couple of light-hearted stories from Horace Wright whose Uncle Orv teased him and the other children. \nThe tour will also feature prominent citizens Col. Edward A. Deeds and Gov. James M. Cox and how they figured in Dayton’s aviation history as well as the Huffman family who many know as manufacturers of the Huffy brand bicycle. Also featured will be veterans of the Army Air Corp and Air Force and how they made a difference in the world of aviation. \nJoin us on Monday\, August 19th at 6:30 pm for this free tour. Park near the Wright Brothers monument and meet us at the family grave site. This tour may be deemed strenuous by some as we will walk up and down the hills of Woodland. Roosevelt\, who issued a presidential proclamation which designated the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday to be National Aviation Day. \nOrville Wright\, born in 1871\, was still alive when the proclamation was first issued\, and would live another nine years. The proclamation was codified (USC 36:I:A:1:118)\, and it allows the sitting President to proclaim August 19 as National Aviation Day each year\, if desired. Their proclamation may direct all federal buildings and installations to fly the US flag on that day\, and may encourage citizens to observe the day with activities that promote interest in aviation. \nReservations required. DESCRIPTION:Due to the corona-virus and the regulations for mask wearing and social distancing\, this event has been canceled. We hope to bring this workshop to you in 2021. Thank you for your understanding. Please be well and stay safe.  \nWoodland is pleased to partner with gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman as she conducts a series of workshops for those who are interested in headstone cleaning and restoration. \nWorkshops will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday’s May 16\, June 20\, August 15 and September 19\, 2020. \nCost is $30 per person for the Beginners class and $50 per person for the Advanced class. You will receive and includes hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on headstone preservation techniques including: fixing breaks\, resetting\, cleaning and how to mix proper mortars for stone repair. You will also receive a Headstone Cleaning Starter Kit that will include all of the tools needed for the day. The entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery.
