While many of these tombstone symbols have simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. SUMMARY:Woodland Headstone Cleaning and Restoration Beginners Class
DESCRIPTION:Woodland is pleased to partner with gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman as she conducts a series of workshops for those who are interested in headstone cleaning and restoration. \nThis workshop will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday\, May 7\, 2022. Cost is $30 per person for the Beginners class. \nYou will receive hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on headstone preservation techniques including fixing breaks\, resetting\, cleaning and how to mix proper mortars for stone repair. You will also receive a Headstone Cleaning Starter Kit that will include all the tools needed for the day. \nThe entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. DESCRIPTION:Can you tell the difference between a maple tree and an oak tree when there are no leaves on the trees?   Believe it or not\, it’s not that difficult if you know where to look and the many clues…bark\, shape\, buds\, and twig structure. \nJoin Maribeth Kambitsch to learn how to identify some of Ohio’s native trees in the spring including oak\, maple\, locust\, beach\, and ash.  As days are getting longer and temperatures warmer\, branches and buds are changing color and size\, and in anticipation of spring\, it will be exciting to check them out.  We will also look at the fascinating adaptations of trees and how they provide important habitat for a variety of other wildlife. \nThis program is for folks of all ages so bring the family. SUMMARY:Paul Laurence Dunbar Annual Graveside Tribute
DESCRIPTION:Woodland Cemetery\, members of the Dunbar Alumni Association and Dayton Dunbareans will celebrate another annual graveside tribute to Dayton’s own Paul Laurence Dunbar on the day of his death\, February 9th. \nPaul Laurence Dunbar became the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance. He was born and raised in Dayton. His short thirty-three years of life were filled with literary achievement and contributions that catapulted him to national and international fame and appreciation. \nThe President of Wilberforce University and the Wilberforce University Choir rendered the first graveside tribute to Paul Laurence Dunbar in the year of 1906. In 1988\, five Dunbar devotees found themselves standing in front of Mr. Dunbar’s grave on the day of his death to pay their respects. The five decided to collectively commemorate Dunbar’s date of death in the future and thus established an annual graveside tribute. \nThrough the years\, the Dayton Dunbar Alumni Association\, the National Park Service\, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum and community volunteers have continued to support the annual tribute.  It is through the efforts of LaVerne Sci\, a Dunbar scholar who once served as the Dunbar House site manager\, that the annual tribute is still celebrated. \n“Dunbar wrote with Dayton as his solid foundation and as his reference\,” stated Mrs. Sci. “It was in Dayton that he found his richest and greatest experiences and all the elements of beauty and joy that he enjoyed.” \nThe Annual Paul Laurence Dunbar Graveside Tribute will begin with a gathering at the grave site of Mr. Dunbar at 10:00 a.m. where a laying of a wreath will take place. A short program of readings and stories will then follow inside the Woodland Mausoleum given by devoted friends of Paul Laurence Dunbar. \nThe event is free and open to the public. All are invited to both the graveside and Mausoleum services. Woodland Cemetery is located at 118 Woodland Avenue off of Brown Street in Dayton. Participants may gather at the front entrance of the Mausoleum for a processional to the Dunbar grave.

While many of these tombstone symbols have fairly simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions.
