SUMMARY:Memorial Day Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Memorial Day as we honor and remember those who have died during service in the U.S. military. It is a day of reflection\, remembrance\, and showing respect for the sacrifices of fallen service members.  This program will take place at Woodland Cemetery in our Veteran’s Lot at 10am and is presented by Sherman Camp No. 93\, Dayton\, Department of Ohio and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. \nThe Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of veteran heroes who fought and worked to save the Union in the American Civil War. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954\, SUVCW is the legal heir and successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. \nIn 1866\, Union Veterans of the Civil War organized into the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and became a social and political force that would control the destiny of the nation for more than six decades. Membership in the veterans’ organization was restricted to individuals who had served in the Army\, Navy\, Marine Corps\, or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War\, thereby limiting the life span of the GAR. The GAR existed until 1956\, ending with the death of the last GAR veteran. \nIn 1881 the GAR formed the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV) to carry on its traditions and memory long after the GAR had ceased to exist. Membership was open to any man who could prove ancestry to a member of the GAR or to a veteran eligible for membership in the GAR. In later years\, men who did not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary membership\, but who demonstrated a genuine interest in the Civil War and could subscribe to the purpose and objectives of the SUVCW\, were admitted as Associates. This practice continues today. \n*In case of inclement weather\, the service will be held in our Historic Tiffany Chapel. \n

SUMMARY:Cancelled-Paul Laurence Dunbar Annual Graveside Tribute
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been cancelled* \nWoodland Cemetery\, members of the Dunbar Alumni Association and Dayton Dunbareans will celebrate another annual graveside tribute to Dayton’s own Paul Laurence Dunbar on June 26th. Dunbar’s birthday was June 27th. \nPaul Laurence Dunbar became the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance. He was born and raised in Dayton. His short thirty-three years of life were filled with literary achievement and contributions that catapulted him to national and international fame and appreciation. \nThe President of Wilberforce University and the Wilberforce University Choir rendered the first graveside tribute to Paul Laurence Dunbar in the year of 1906. In 1988\, five Dunbar devotees found themselves standing in front of Mr. Dunbar’s grave on the day of his death to pay their respects. The five decided to collectively commemorate Dunbar’s date of death in the future and thus established an annual graveside tribute. \nThrough the years\, the Dayton Dunbar Alumni Association\, the National Park Service\, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum and community volunteers have continued to support the annual tribute. It is through the efforts of LaVerne Sci\, a Dunbar scholar who once served as the Dunbar House site manager\, that the annual tribute is still celebrated. \n“Dunbar wrote with Dayton as his solid foundation and as his reference\,” stated Mrs. Sci. “It was in Dayton that he found his richest and greatest experiences and all the elements of beauty and joy that he enjoyed.” \nThe Annual Paul Laurence Dunbar Graveside Tribute will begin with a gathering at the grave site of Mr. Dunbar at 10:00 a.m. where a laying of a wreath will take place. A short program of readings and stories will then follow inside the Woodland Mausoleum given by devoted friends of Paul Laurence Dunbar. \nThe event is free and open to the public. All are invited to both the graveside and Mausoleum services.  Participants may gather at the front entrance of the Mausoleum at 9:45 a.m. for a processional to the Dunbar grave.

SUMMARY:Jewelia Higgins Garden and Marker Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Charity’s Children Project\, in partnership with Woodland Historic Cemetery and Arboretum\, presents the Higgins Garden Dedication and installation of the Jewelia Galloway Higgins National Votes for Women Trail Historic Marker funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. \nJewelia Ann Galloway Higgins\n1873–1955\nBorn in Dayton\, Ohio\, Jewelia Ann Galloway Higgins inherited a legacy rooted in early Black settlement\, the Underground Railroad\, and generations of activism. A descendant of Charity Davis Caesar Broady\, among Dayton’s first Black settlers\, Higgins carried forward a tradition of leadership that shaped her life’s work. A suffragist\, humanitarian\, and community organizer\, Higgins served as one of the first\, if not the first Black Red Cross nurse in Dayton. She played a pivotal role in advancing voting rights during a time of deep racial and gender discrimination. \nThrough her leadership in organizations such as the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the Women’s Christian Association (“Colored YWCA”)\, she expanded opportunities for Black women and families. Alongside her husband\, Rev. Charles D. Higgins—a boyhood friend of Paul Laurence Dunbar— she helped build institutions that supported faith\, education\, and social justice in Dayton’s Black community. Her life reflects a continuum of service\, resilience\, and leadership—one that continues to inspire generations. \n5:00 PM – Guest Arrival & Chapel Exhibit Viewing \nGuests arrive and are welcomed into the Tiffany Chapel area\, where they may view the pictorial exhibit prior to the formal program. \n5:15 PM – Opening Program \nBrief welcome and opening remarks inside the chapel area. \n5:30 / 5:45 PM – Black History & Cemetery Tour \nGuided walking tour highlighting historically significant individuals and sites\, concluding at the Higgins Garden. There will be a brief garden dedication and unveiling of the Jewelia Galloway Higgins National Votes for Women Trail Historic Marker \nApproximately 6:00 PM  – Outdoor Social & Food Truck Gathering ( D’Lish Catering) \nGuests return to the Tiffany Chapel area for fellowship\, refreshments\, and food truck service. \nTentative conclusion around 7:00 PM. \n
