Thousands of different religious and secular symbols and emblems have adorned tombstones through the ages\, indicating attitudes towards death and the hereafter\, membership in a fraternal or social organization\, or an individual’s trade\, occupation\, or even ethnic identity. While many of these tombstone symbols have simple interpretations\, it is not always easy to determine their meaning and significance. We were not present when these symbols were carved into the stone and can’t claim to know our ancestors’ intentions. They may have included a particular symbol for no other reason than because they thought it was pretty. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Whether you are looking for a Carolina Wren\, Black and White Warbler or a beautiful Cardinal\, bring your binoculars\, take a stroll and search our beautiful grounds. \nJason Antonick\, started birding over 40 years ago as a kid taking Summer Lore classes at the Dayton Museum of Natural History (today known as the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery). One of his first programs was a birding class at Englewood MetroPark. “I still remember the excitement at the age of 6 years old when a giant Great Blue Heron flew 50 feet overhead! I was hooked\, and have been an active birder ever since.” \nWoodland Cemetery and Arboretum is located at 118 Woodland Avenue off of Brown Street near University of Dayton campus. SUMMARY:Woodland Historic Tour
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1841\, Woodland is one of the oldest rural cemeteries in the United States. Visit the final resting place of the Wright Brothers\, Paul Laurence Dunbar\, Erma Bombeck\, James Ritty\, the Stanley Family\, the Mead Family\, George Newcom and many other famous and infamous Daytonians. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Parking is available both inside and outside the gates. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle if needed. Tours will launch rain or shine\, except in the event of thunder or lightning. \nAll tours require a reservation and there is a suggested $5 donation.
