DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a summer morning looking for our year-round residents\, and for species that breed in our area like Yellow-throated Warbler and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. We might even see fledglings of species like Chipping Sparrow and Cooper’s Hawk. Bring your binoculars and dress for the weather. The walk is slow-paced\, and mostly stays on the road surface\, but sometimes does venture “off-trail” into the grass. All ages welcome. The tour will meet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. \nYour nature guide will be Amanda Lawson\, an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist. \nAll tours require a reservation and there is a suggested $5 donation. DESCRIPTION:Woodland is pleased to announce the return of our gravestone preservation workshop in June! The workshop will be conducted by gravestone restoration expert Misti Spillman\, who is the manager of preservation at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum. The workshop will focus on gravestone cleaning and preservation.  \nThis workshop will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday\, June 8\, 2024. Cost is $40 per person for the Beginners class. \nYou will receive hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on gravestone preservation techniques including fixing breaks\, resetting and proper cleaning methods. You will also receive a gravestone cleaning starter kit that will include all the tools needed for the day. \nThe entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. SUMMARY:Woodland Historic Tour
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1841\, Woodland is one of the oldest rural cemeteries in the United States. Visit the final resting place of the Wright Brothers\, Paul Laurence Dunbar\, Erma Bombeck\, James Ritty\, the Stanley Family\, the Mead Family\, George Newcom and many other famous and infamous Daytonians. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Parking is available both inside and outside the gates. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle if needed. Tours will launch rain or shine\, except in the event of thunder or lightning. \nAll tours require a reservation and there is a suggested $5 donation. All donations support the Woodland Arboretum Foundation which focuses on the restoration\, preservation\, horticultural and educational projects needed to keep Woodland a cultural resource for Dayton and Ohio. \nFor reservations please click the website link under details.
