SUMMARY:Gravestone Preservation Workshop- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Woodland is pleased to announce the return of our gravestone preservation workshops in June and July. The workshop will be conducted by gravestone preservation expert Misti Spillman\, who is the manager of preservation at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum. The workshop will focus on gravestone cleaning and preservation. \nThis workshop will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday\, June 21\, 2025. Cost is $50 per person for the Beginners class. \nYou will receive hands on\, one-on-one and group instruction on gravestone preservation techniques including fixing breaks\, resetting and proper cleaning methods. You will also receive a gravestone cleaning starter kit that will include all the tools needed for the day. \nThe entire workshop will be spent in the cemetery. A break for lunch will be provided. Please feel free to bring a lunch or visit any of the restaurants on Brown Street. \nMisti Spillman has a background in researching and restoring cemeteries. She worked as an AmeriCorps member at the Ohio History Connection and serves as a reference and liaison to numerous museums and historical societies throughout Ohio. Misti is the owner of Reviving Cemeteries\, LLC and has conducted workshops at Woodland in the past. \nThis class is limited to 30 people.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Memorial Day as we honor and remember those who have died during service in the U.S. military. It is a day of reflection\, remembrance\, and showing respect for the sacrifices of fallen service members.  This program will take place at Woodland Cemetery in our Veteran’s Lot at 10am and is presented by Sherman Camp No. 93\, Dayton\, Department of Ohio and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. \nThe Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of veteran heroes who fought and worked to save the Union in the American Civil War. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954\, SUVCW is the legal heir and successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. \nIn 1866\, Union Veterans of the Civil War organized into the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and became a social and political force that would control the destiny of the nation for more than six decades. Membership in the veterans’ organization was restricted to individuals who had served in the Army\, Navy\, Marine Corps\, or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War\, thereby limiting the life span of the GAR. The GAR existed until 1956\, ending with the death of the last GAR veteran. \nIn 1881 the GAR formed the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV) to carry on its traditions and memory long after the GAR had ceased to exist. Membership was open to any man who could prove ancestry to a member of the GAR or to a veteran eligible for membership in the GAR. In later years\, men who did not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary membership\, but who demonstrated a genuine interest in the Civil War and could subscribe to the purpose and objectives of the SUVCW\, were admitted as Associates. This practice continues today. \n  \n

Doren; Dayton historical author\, Charlotte Reeve Conover; rodeo rider\, Marguerite Doane; famous actress and woman scorned\, Mrs. Leslie Carter and many\, many more. \nMeet at the Eichelberger Plaza at the main gates of the cemetery. Parking is available both inside and outside the gates. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle if needed.
